By coming to this website you have most likely heard or read
about the Fourth Way, or about exponents of the Fourth Way such as
Gurdjieff and Ouspensky.
Or you may be a current or past student of the Fourth Way looking
for the means to make more progress.
There are many things that you should know about the Fourth Way,
its source, its meaning and its real value.
For the Fourth Way is actually much more than esoteric
psychology. It is the key component in a complete spiritual path
leading to consciousness and superconsciousness.
THE DEVELOPMENT OF "I’s"
It is true that personality has been deeply fragmented starting
in early life, resulting in the formation of many different "I’s."
Each of these "I’s" takes over the personality at various times, and
each of these "I’s" has its own agenda.
Therefore one is continually in a state of inner confusion and
conflict, and as long as the personality is fragmented there can be
no peace. In a sense the personality is in a state of civil war.
If one is in pieces, one cannot be at peace.
However, it is vitally important to know why and how this
fragmentation takes place and why, without special spiritual tools
that have been lost to the Fourth Way, unification of the
personality cannot occur.
ASTRAL BODY
A misunderstanding about the existence of the astral body
developed long ago as the Fourth Way principles were being handed
down from age to age.
The astral body does exist and we are directly connected
to it through the emotional center. The astral body is the emotional
body, a major component of the personality.
It is the fragmentation of the astral body that produces "I’s"
and it is essential to work on the astral body in order to reverse
this fragmentation, to reunify the personality, to become conscious.
SAMSKARAS
Each emotional trauma we identify with as infants, children and
adults creates in the astral body a samskara, an astral
"scar." As these astral "scars" expand they lead directly to
fragmentation of the astral body, thereby forming "I’s" in the
personality.
Until and unless these emotional or astral "scars" are healed,
the personality remains fragmented.
Healing of samskaras takes place by evoking in oneself a
transcendental state from which the third force, or neutralizing
force, can be focused on them. This transcendental state is known as
Self-Observation, and it can be evoked in oneself only by
special spiritual methods.
In the ancient eastern scriptures it was strongly advised to
learn how to divide oneself into the "observer" and the "observed."
SELF-OBSERVATION AND SELF-REMEMBERING
Unfortunately many current Fourth Way schools teach methods that
perpetuate the illusion of Self-Observation and Self-Remembering by
evoking an artificial state of "inner separation" in the
personality.
One simply imagines that one is self-observing or
self-remembering, but actual reunification of the personality is not
occurring. One is actually not becoming conscious.
Self-Observation is produced by evoking in oneself a
transcendental state, an out-of-the-body state, from which one is
able to clearly view the personality fragments.
In the state of Self-Observation higher laws can be effectively
utilized to neutralize the underlying samskaras and reunite the
disparate personality fragments or "I’s."
Self-Remembering is a transcendental state higher than
Self-Observation, in which one is aware of oneself as something
completely separate from the machine and its personality. In this
state there is no thought – only transcendental intuition.
When the personality is unified the state of Self-Remembering is
constant and one is therefore conscious. In effect one has
crystallized as Man or Woman #4.
STOPPING IDENTIFICATION
The process of disidentifying from the machine and its
personality is a spiritual transcendental process. It can only be
accomplished through the gradual physical withdrawal of
consciousness from the machine, and the extent to which physical
withdrawal has taken place is the extent to which we have reversed
identification.
The less we are identified with the machine the fewer samskaras
are created, in effect ending the process of personality
fragmentation.
BEING
"To be or not to be is the question." From the standpoint of the
Fourth Way, due to the fragmentation and mechanicality of the
personality, one has no real being. Being can only exist when there
is unity in the personality.
There are seven levels of being. The level of being of Man or
Woman #4 is to be unified at the level of personality, that is to be
conscious. The level of being of Man or Woman #7 is to be
unified with the infinite or absolute, experiencing eternal
awareness, joy, peace and love, that is to be superconscious.
To become superconscious one must first become conscious. Without
inner unity it is impossible to develop higher levels of being in
oneself.
There are some who may believe they have reached the level of
being of Man or Woman #4 or higher, but it is not possible to reach
this state until the personality is fully unified.
To unify the personality requires transcendental tools, spiritual
tools, that are empowered to neutralize the underlying samskaras
that created the "I’s" in the first place. These tools were
available in the original spiritual system of which the Fourth Way
was the key component.
THE FOURTH WAY WAS ORIGINALLY PART OF A SPIRITUAL PATH LEADING TO
CONSCIOUSNESS AND SUPERCONSCIOUSNESS
THE WORK
The Work consists of correct and consistent application of
spiritual or transcendental tools to become conscious and then
superconscious. For the Work to be successful one must find a
superconscious School, or School #7, and a superconscious Teacher, a
Man or Woman #7, from whom the necessary spiritual tools can be
obtained.
Such a Teacher has written a book entitled simply "TRUTH"
that explains all of the above in much greater detail, as well as
many other very important things that must be included as part of
the Work.
When you read this book you will come to know how and where the
Fourth Way fits into the process of becoming truly conscious and
superconscious, and what will be necessary for you to engage in this
process for yourself. This book serves as the primary textbook for
the School.
